Meet at the Boat Launch by 8:45 am. Ticks are out so bring strong insect spray and spray your boots, legs, etc. Bring PLENTY of drinking water and lunch or at least a snack. Wear boots that protect your ankles and provide good traction.
Horse Trail Blazers: Larry Wheat and company will drive to the north end of Flat Rock Road, through the Friends gate and around to the west portion of the Central Loop horse trail. Their latest flagging took us across a stream and into some really nice hardwood forest. 4x4 vehicles required for transport.
Hiking Trail Blazers: will be starting with some landscaping tasks and giving a helping hand to the Georgia Geocachers. Then we'll be scouting future trails either on the north end of the park or around the granite outcrops and park high point near Trail Head 1.
Tools for this time: Tarps, Steel Garden Rakes, Machetes, pruning shears, loppers.
9:00-9:30 - Shuttle Run: Georgia Geocachers is having a cache-hunting day at the park and is asking for help shuttling folks to the north end of the Riverside/Bend Trail. There will be three waves hitting the trails at 9:30, 10:30 and 11:30 (or so). Folks with big ol' pickups and high-capacity SUVs, would y'all mind taking a little ride?
9:30-11:00 - Pine Straw Collection: Those who drive up to the north end of the park will be collecting pine straw from the planted pine groves to use for landscaping at the Visitor's Center. Please bring large tarps and steel garden rakes.
11:00-11:30 - Shuttle Run: just in time for the last wave to begin.
11:30-1:00 - Trail scouting and exploring.
Volunteers scattered in the winds to maintain our trails -- our entire 8 miles is clear! Meanwhile, Boy Scouts put in an Eagle Scout project: a bridge over the strean on the Riverside-Campground Loop.
Three volunteers put down top soil from EMC, 15 bags of lime and $425 of wild flower seed in three areas near Campground 1. Click here for photos!
The Muddy Spokes mountain bike trail blazers were also out scouting trails.
22 volunteers in 24 canoes, kayaks and motorboats pulled 400 lb of assorted 'trash' out of the Hooch; 6 more volunteers helped park a couple hundred cars then helped the river rats empty their boats of debris and detritus. Click here for photos!
Eleven volunteers donated their time and effort to further the creation of equestrian trails and facilities at The Bend. We walked the forest and flagged 0.8 miles of future trail located near the planned equestrian trailhead. Later in the day we walked the designated area for the future equestrian parking lot/trailhead.
Our next scheduled trail flagging day is Saturday, May 19th. We will probably schedule a mid-week day before then to give additional volunteers the opportunity to enjoy layout of a future trail.
We make weather assessments prior to every volunteer day, usually the days before, but sometimes as late as an hour before the scheduled start. If a "No-Go" or a "delayed start" is issued, we will change the status here and we will email everyone.
Events for the days listed are also on our Facebook Group, so the status will change there as well (note that you have the ability to receive notifications via text message from facebook).

The mandatory first step for all Scouting projects is to contact John Sims, Scoutmaster, Troop 57 (Newnan) and Coweta District Member at jcsims@peoplepc.com for additional information and directions.
Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venture Scouts are encouraged to consider projects in the Park for Service Projects, Conservation Projects, and Eagle Scout Projects, etc. There are many opportunities including small and large bridges, numerous benches and tables, and spur trails, just to name a few. All projects will be considered so request one of the projects above or we encourage you to design your own project and submit it for review.
