April 9, 2016 ~ Chattahoochee Riverkeeper
Sweep the Hooch

8:30 am - ?

Please read all information below...

Volunteer Shirts and Lunch are provided courtesy the Bend Friends! :-)

Once you have registered on the CRK site below, email friendsofchattahoocheebend@gmail.com and let us know -- or Join the Event on Facebook.

CHATTAHOOCHEE BEND SP is hosting a HIKE cleanup from the Day Use Area and a RIVER cleanup trip - the usual "in-the-park" 3-mile trip from the North Platform Campground to the Day Use Area.

(We may also have a 10-mile trip from the Hwy 16 launch. Only experienced paddlers who have run that section of river can go on that trip. It's for your safety.)

For the in-the-park cleanup, meet at the boat ramp by 8:30am to do paperwork and load boats and gear. The Hwy 16 group - if there is one - will receive emails from the organizer about where to be when.

REGISTRATION with Chattahoochee Riverkeepers IS **REQUIRED**

REGISTRATION OPENS SOON!

ALL VOLUNTEERS

Meet at Boat Ramp parking beginning at 8:30.

PADDLERS

Depart for put-in by 9:00 am. We will shuttle canoes and kayaks, people and equipment to the north end of the park. Trucks and SUVs are needed to access the Bend Put-in. Short, narrow trailers, especially those for canoes and kayaks -- would be a bonus.

Previous experience paddling and maneuvering loaded canoes or kayaks in moving water is suggested. The Hooch is normally a rather lazy river, but it's a big one with underwater obstacles. And, the trash likes to 'swim' away from boats. ;-)

ALSO BRING: NITRILE-COATED gloves ($2 at hardware stores), old laundry baskets, light plastic storage bins, "pik-stik" grabbing tools, trash pokers, etc.

We anticipate that the water level will be too low to allow safe use of propeller-driven motorboats.

Our cleanup cruise will be 3.3 miles downstream from the north end of the park to the boat ramp. Depending on river flow, we can paddle upstream about 1 mile to the NE corner of the park. We're also hoping to get downstream from the boat ramp.

WALKERS

Walkers will hike the Riverside Trail to a point about 1.5 miles upriver from the Day Use Area and scour the banks - where accessible - on their way back.

Support crew will also help set up the lunch tent, get gear to clean boats, etc.

SCOUTING PROJECTS

The mandatory first step for all Scouting projects is to contact John Sims, Scoutmaster, Troop 57 (Newnan) and Coweta District Member at jcsims@peoplepc.com for additional information and directions.

Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venture Scouts are encouraged to consider projects in the Park for Service Projects, Conservation Projects, and Eagle Scout Projects, etc. There are many opportunities including small and large bridges, numerous benches and tables, and spur trails, just to name a few. All projects will be considered so request one of the projects above or we encourage you to design your own project and submit it for review.

Weather Assessment

We make weather assessments prior to every volunteer day, usually days before, but sometimes as late as an hour before the scheduled start. If a "No-Go" or a "delayed start" is issued, we will change the status here and we will email everyone.

Events for the days listed are also on our Facebook Group, so the status will change there as well (note that you have the ability to receive notifications via text message from facebook).
